Battery Types
Below is a summary of the strength and limitations of today's popular battery systems. Although energy density is paramount, other important attributes are service life, load characteristics, maintenance requirements, self-discharge, cost, and safety.
Lithium-ion is divided into three versions. The first is traditional cobalt, which is commonly used in cell phones, cameras, and laptops. Manganese (spinel) is the second and is used in high-end power tools. The third and newest version is phosphate, which competes directly with manganese for high power applications.
